SOCIETY OF EXPLORATION GEOPHYSICS(SEG) CHALLENGE BOWL REPORT HELD IN NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA ON 19TH OCTOBER 2015

SEG challenge bowl is an action packed geoscience quiz game for geological and geophysical students.
Mid this year, Vallary Kimatwek and Margaret Njoroge of the Institute of Mining and Mineral Processing had won the competition in the 3rd African Geoscience Student Conference held at JKUAT where they beat the University of Nairobi with whom they had been left in the finals. Their achievement won them a travel grant to New Orleans, Louisiana, USA for the Global finals competition where they represented Kenya and Africa.
In the New Orleans competition, the questions featured intense competition on challenging geosciences questions. It included several rounds of questions with each round having consequent elimination in order to come up with the winner.
The two SEKU students did us proud in the competitions and emerged in 5th position worldwide where the first position was taken by master’s students from Institute of Applied Geophysics in Russia and the second by students from University of Colorado, USA.
The University congratulates Vallary and Margaret for their efforts in helping take the university to the next level and making good use of what they have learnt in the last four years.
The two students are now urging geology students and all other students from different departments to always participate in such activities, and surely, their efforts will not be in vain.
