Professor Mathu is the Director of the Institute of Mining and Mineral Processing (IMM&P) and an Associate Professor in Geology specialized in Mineralogy, Petrology, Structural Geology, Field Geology and Engineering Geology. He was formerly the Dean, School of Earth Sciences in South Eastern Kenya University SEKU.
Prof Mathu previously worked as lecture in the University of Nairobi where he joined as a Graduate Assistant in 1979 and rose to become Senior Lecturer and the Chairman of the Department of Geology during the period October 2002 to 2009. During the period of service Prof. Mathu extended his services to Moi University as a Part-time Lecture in Engineering Geology and in the Kenya Polytechnic, Department of Applied Sciences.
Apart from study visits which he has done in Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, niversity of Ottawa and Carleton University, Canada, University of Karsruhe, Germany and Nagoya University, Japan Prof Mathu has done several local and international trainings including Structural Geology and Fabric Analysis, Geological Regional Mapping, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, organized by Addis Ababa University, Ottawa-Carelton Centre for Geoscience Studies, Canada, IDRC and Ethiopian Government and Geological Field Mapping Exercise in the Geotraverse III in Western Kenya, Maseno to Kakamega, organized by the Geology Department, University of Nairobi, Kenya Government and UNESCO to mention just a few.

He has extensively been engaged in Consultancy related services both locally and internationally, which among the current ongoing ones is on Kitui County Geological Issues and with Pass Africa Ground Water Company and Aqua Mines Co Ltd.  He has more than 10 completed consultancies including one done for Spirit Mining Co.Ltd.  (USA) (2003)
